Training, talking and other similar activities are not going to change women’s status or get women into senior positions of leadership or management in greater numbers. Economic and political action is needed. There are at least three ways you can take effective action now. Join me in making real change by taking one or all of the following actions now
Taxpayer Action, Shareholder Action and Consumer Action
1.) Tax Payer Action
Put the onus on underwriters of municipals bond to prove to us, the taxpayers that they do not discriminate anymore. Tax payers must demand that our city councils and board of supervisors hold accountable those investment banks, such as Citigroup, that bring cities’ municipals bonds to market. Insist that our elected representatives demand from all underwriters who do business with our municipalities to prove to us that they no longer discriminate. It’s easy for companies to prove that they don’t discriminate.
Several publically trades companies (in Europe) are already doing it.
Ask your elected rep to take the action of putting their underwriters on notice by writing a simple letter. Companies need to be told that we expect them to hire and promote women if they expect to continue to business with us (we the people).
Your letter could be something like the following:
Dear Public Representative,
I am writing to ask you to ensure that (insert the name of your city or county) no longer does business with investment firms that discriminate against women. We know that investment firms do discriminate against women. The evidence is overwhelming and we must put a stop to it. Please write a brief letter to (insert name investment firm) stating that your constituents demand proof that (investment firm name) no longer discriminates. A published roster of senior management positions and who occupies them will suffice. Thank you for your effort.
Sincerely,
Your name here
